Amy

Coach

International Tax Accountant by day, CrossFit coach by early morning.

How'd you know you wanted to become a coach?

After 4 years of inconsistency I started to get serious and fell in love with CrossFit again and especially weightlifting. I wanted to share that passion with everyone.

What do you find the most challenging about working out/CrossFit?

Ignoring my ego. Being an "older" athlete can make me feel defeated at times but I have been working on worrying less about what weights and times everyone else is hitting and focusing on my own goals and personal growth - and no that doesn't only mean PRs. It means my all aspects of my healthy lifestyle.

What's the real reason you do CrossFit?

So I can move that proverbial dresser when someone needs help.

What's the soundtrack for your class?

Metallica or old school hip hop

What has CrossFit empowered you to do outside the gym?

Wear shorts. CrossFit and the journey it started me on has made me feel more confident than I ever thought possible.

Bobby

Coach

CrossFit coach by early afternoon, Saloon Bartender by night. Bored on a Saturday night? Come on down and I'll buy you a shot!

How'd you know you wanted to become a coach?

It's been almost six years since I first started doing CrossFit and I was (still am?) so obsessed with it that I couldn't wait to start coaching people. Over the years I learned that I really enjoy teaching weightlifting and our Olympic lifting class is one of my favorite groups to work with!

What do you still find the most challenging about working out/CrossFit?

The biggest challenge for me is pushing myself past my perceived limits. The longer I am in CrossFit, the easier it is for me to say "I haven't done it by now, so it probably won't happen" so I am always searching for inspiration to improve.

What's the real reason you do CrossFit?

So I can eat inhuman amounts of food. I push myself so hard so I can eat a large pizza, order of hot wings, cheesy bread and a milkshake...in one sitting.

What's the soundtrack for your class?

All over the place. I'll use pop, rock, techno, house, country and every so often I'll throw in a musical sound track.

What has CrossFit has empowered you to do outside the gym?

I took a summer off of CrossFit to focus on rock climbing. It was a big deal for me because I do not do well with heights but I would not have progressed as far as I did without the strength I developed in CrossFit.

Brent

GM/Coach

General Manager of CrossFit Nordeast by day, coach by night.

How'd you know you wanted to become a coach?

I walked into a box in the fall of 2010, got my ass kicked by a “Tabata” workout that crushed me and my ego. It was humbling but I was smiling and I wanted more. I knew then that I had to do this. That day opened possibilities to pursue CrossFit as a career and a lifestyle so with the opening of CrossFit Nordeast, I was given my first opportunity to do what I love to do: Coach.

What do you still find the most challenging about working out/CrossFit?

CrossFit is a continuing evolution of fitness and there will always be some sort of goal to chase. The biggest struggle for me in CrossFit is finding the right balance with recovery, the intensity and the frequency with which I train. Also Burpees.

What's the real reason you do CrossFit?

I do CrossFit so I can eat everything (Five Guys, Pizza, Donuts, etc)

What's the soundtrack for your class?

My usual soundtrack is Hip Hop, but making sure I mix it up with Rock, a little Heavy Metal, and of course 80s hits. Anything that I can find that makes people move.

What has CrossFit empowered you to do outside the gym?

I’ve always been active but as I get older, I believe CrossFit has allowed me to stay young and stay active. Being able to chase my kids around is and will always be important to me.

Bryan

Coach

How'd you know you wanted to become a coach?

I ended up coaching CrossFit after judging people during the CrossFit Open a few years ago. I loved being in a place to encourage people to blast through boundaries and as a coach, I can do that all year long!

What do you still find the most challenging about working out/CrossFit?

As a member of the masters division the most challenging thing for me is to do the things I should be doing, like mobility, while balancing the things I want to be doing, like throwing heavy things around. My focus is slowly shifting from GO, GO, GO! to longevity.

What's the real reason you do CrossFit?

So I can just be better at adventuring...that includes thoroughly enjoying the unhealthy parts!

What's the soundtrack for your class?

I'm all over the map but generally you can count on anything loud and aggressive!

I've been able to take up a number of different activities like exploring the city on my single speed and getting in the occasional backpacking trip.

What do you find the most challenging about working out/CrossFit?

For me, the most difficult part of CrossFit is fitting it all in. There are so many things I constantly want to improve on, but only so many hours in the day. It's hard to pick and choose!

Speaking of dancing, you can expect THE best music of any coach in my classes (there's been an unofficial poll) that will include dance tracks and club hits that you can't help but shake your new CrossFit booty to. Expect to see me dancing while you're WODing.

What has CrossFit empowered you to do outside the gym?

Whether it's skiing, wakeboarding, marathons, biking, or hockey, I know that I never have to second guess if I'm fit enough to thoroughly enjoy those things because of the strong athletic foundation CrossFit has given me. Get out and USE your fitness!

Logan

Owner/Head Coach

Owner of CrossFit Nordeast & Linden Hills by day, CrossFit coach at noon and early evening

How'd you know you wanted to become a coach?

When I started spending more time reading the CrossFit Journal at my desk job than doing my actual work, I knew it was time for a career change. CrossFit allowed me to pursue my passion for fitness and break out of the corporate setting.

What do you still find the most challenging about working out/CrossFit?

Pushing through discomfort. It’s easy to go through the motions. Pushing my boundaries and getting myself to do more than I think I can has always been a big challenge for me.

What's the real reason you do CrossFit?

So I can eat tacos

What's the soundtrack for your class?

Variety! I tend toward upbeat hip hop and electronica but will not hesitate to rock some Pantera now and then.

What has CrossFit empowered you to do outside the gym?

CrossFit has empowered me to not shy away from any physical activity. Before CrossFit I would complain about going on a walk if I didn’t have sufficient notice. Now I’m always up for getting outside and trying new things. My most recent “new thing” is golf. I know, it’s not some crazy physical challenge but before CrossFit I wouldn’t have even given golf a chance. Part of what I love about CrossFit is the student mindset. Learning new things is fun and keeps us alive!

Coach

Chef by day, CrossFit junkie and coach by night.

How'd you know you wanted to become a coach?

I was trapped in the world of boring endurance and solo gym sessions. I needed a change in vantage points, I needed a new community.

Focus on technique and not always chasing PR numbers. It is really hard to dial it back and work on the things that suck and not just throw fat plates on and call it a day.

What's the real reason you do CrossFit?

I do CrossFit so I can be ripped at 35 when all my classmates are flabby.

What's the soundtrack for your class?

I love throwing on some 90’s and early 2000’s “summer jams”. We are the perfect age group to know the choreographed ByeByeBye dance but way too cool to admit to it. Then you’ll catch someone rocking out to some Blink182 they totally dug in high school followed by Britney, it makes me smile.

What's one thing CrossFit has empowered you to do outside the gym?

Knowing that no matter the adventure I can be ready for it: Hike 5 miles with a 30lb pack? Check, stamina for days. Snowboard the back country at 10K feet elevation? No problem, I've got the legs and lungs. Take a crash course in downhill mountain biking and then do a 3 day weekend of 10 hrs/day in the saddle? You got it.

Zack

Coach
