How'd you know you wanted to become a coach?

I played sports throughout high school and college (swimming, hockey, track, cross country, cycling) and learned so much from coaches along the way. As I moved into lifting/crossfit I found the guidance of knowledgeable and understanding coaches was so important. I want to be that coach for others!

What do you still find the most challenging about working out/CrossFit?

Remembering to practice the skills/lifts that don't make me feel like a rock star. Muscle ups, I am looking at you!

What's the real reason you do CrossFit?

I look at my fellow crossfitters as teammates. It is so awesome to see people grow as athletes, hit big lifts, and hang out outside of the gym!

What's the soundtrack for your class?

Motley Cru, Lizzo, Rhianna, Cardi B, Avenged Sevenfold, Big Sean, Metallica. I am all over the place!

What has CrossFit empowered you to do outside the gym?

Survived a mosh pit, Spartan Races, and really enjoying rest days

How'd you know you wanted to become a coach?

I’ve coached gymnastics and golf for on/off for several years so coaching CrossFit seemed liked a natural fit. After practicing CrossFit for 2 years I kept thinking it would be fun to coach. I wanted to learn more about the movements in order to up my Crossfit game. I really enjoy seeing/helping others learn new skills and PR!

What do you still find the most challenging about working out/CrossFit?

I am a fairly competitive person so one thing that’s challenging is that someone is always better! While I love that it makes me push myself I’ve had to learn to adjust my expectations at times.

What's the real reason you do CrossFit?

I do Crossfit because I love it! No joke. I’ve always done competitive sports and it has the same feel. It’s never boring and honestly sometimes I like that I feel completely out of breath.

What's the soundtrack for your class?

Probably dance/EDM music or 90s/2000s pop or hip hop

What has CrossFit empowered you to do outside the gym?

Crossfit has changed my life outside the gym completely. It’s made me happier and healthier both mentally and physically

Coach/Owner

Entrepreneur and coach by day, mom 24/7.

How'd you know you wanted to become a coach?

The gym is truly an extension of our family and I wanted the opportunity to contribute not just as an owner and athlete, but also as a coach.

What do you still find the most challenging about working out/CrossFit?

All of it. Every workout challenges me and that’s why I come back every time.

What's the real reason you do CrossFit?

It’s the only thing I’ve done that has changed my whole body for the better. Not just my physical fitness level, but my overall wellness, nutrition and mental health.

What's the soundtrack for your class?

It’s a mixed bag really. Michael Jackson, some old school hip hop, some random 80’s yacht rock and some 90s pop.

What has CrossFit empowered you to do outside the gym?

It’s given me confidence as a mom, as an entrepreneur and as an athlete. I’m not afraid to try anything.

How'd you know you wanted to become a coach?

When I first joined CrossFit I had no idea I would want to coach. But after a few months, I knew that CrossFit was something I wanted in my life as more than just a workout. I wanted to learn it more deeply, and maybe even make a career out of it.

What do you find the most challenging about working out/CrossFit?

For me, the most difficult part of CrossFit is fitting it all in. There are so many things I constantly want to improve on, but only so many hours in the day. It's hard to pick and choose!

What's the real reason you do CrossFit?

So I can unapologetically dance after every big lift I hit. It brings me joy; and seems to light up my social media.

What's the soundtrack for your class?

Speaking of dancing, you can expect THE best music of any coach in my classes (there's been an unofficial poll) that will include dance tracks and club hits that you can't help but shake your new CrossFit booty to. Expect to see me dancing while you're WODing.

What has CrossFit empowered you to do outside the gym?

Whether it's skiing, wakeboarding, marathons, biking, or hockey, I know that I never have to second guess if I'm fit enough to thoroughly enjoy those things because of the strong athletic foundation CrossFit has given me. Get out and USE your fitness!

How'd you know you wanted to become a coach?

I was a long distance runner for years and after becoming injured multiple times by the volume of training I began to incorporate cross training into my running workouts. I was able to shave off an extra 20 minutes on my marathon by weightlifting more and running less during my training season. After this I soon joined CrossFit and have never looked back making it a priority to help others learn how to train smart and move well while accomplishing their goals, big or small!

What do you find the most challenging about working out/CrossFit?

The barbell and heavy lifting has always been a struggle for me. I can run in circles all day but as soon as you put a bar in my hands I need to rethink my approach to the workout. With good form and technique through the CrossFit methodology I have become a lot better at weightlifting.

What's the real reason you do CrossFit?

Get my competitive fix and reduce injury.

What's the soundtrack for your class?

Rage Against the Machine, Royal Blood, Jack White, Beastie Boys, etc.

What has CrossFit empowered you to do outside the gym?

Move smart and live well

What do you still find the most challenging about working out/CrossFit?

Olympic lifts and anything with the word "sprint" in it.

What's the real reason you do CrossFit?

So I never have to wear a shirt and can conquer the world.

What's the soundtrack for your class?

Lady Gaga, punk rock, or Drake-esque rap.

What has CrossFit empowered you to do outside the gym?

Power lifting and strongman competitions.

How'd you know you wanted to become a coach?

I wanted to become a coach because I was an athlete growing up and had a few memorable coaches who taught me so much about strength- physical, mental, and emotional strength. After overcoming a very difficult time with my personal health and fitness many years ago, I felt that it was my turn to help others discover, build, and maximize their strengths in and outside the gym. And I am a social butterfly!

What do you still find the most challenging about working out/CrossFit?

Definitely breaking that mental barrier to get through some of the more difficult workouts (either strength or skill related). You just have to get out of your head and believe in yourself and your abilities.

What's the real reason you do CrossFit?

It's a fun way to fitness! It keeps me strong, challenges me, is different every day, and the community is the best.

What's the soundtrack for your class?

All over the place, but really anything that keeps people moving and me dancing.

What has CrossFit empowered you to do outside the gym?

CrossFit has empowered me to take better care of myself in all aspects of my life and reinforce a great relationship with fitness, recovery, food, and my body.

How'd you know you wanted to become a coach?

Being able to help others improve their form to become more proficient in their training has always been rewarding to me. It seemed like a logical step in CrossFit the more I learned about the movements myself, the more I wanted to share that knowledge to help others.

What do you still find the most challenging about working out/CrossFit?

Gymnastics movements still give me a hard time. Calculating how many cookies I’ve just earned from the workout can be challenging.

What's the real reason you do CrossFit?

After years and years of the typical Monday: Chest-day, Tuesday: Back-day, Wednesday: Leg-day, etc routine; I was bored. I needed to find something that would not only switch up my routine, but keep me engaged and looking forward to working out without becoming monotonous. CrossFit fulfilled that perfectly for me with its constantly varied workouts.

What's the soundtrack for your class?

Whatever was left playing on Spotify last. I enjoy working out to opera, slow jams but that's when I'm working out by myself.

What has CrossFit empowered you to do outside the gym?

I’ve been into fitness in one way or another my entire life. What I feel it has added mostly, is being fit in more widespread ranges of activities. And mostly it has kept me from slowing down as I get older... in fact I feel like I just keep getting better and better.

How'd you know you wanted to become a coach?

In Crossfit, I found myself, my people and my passion. Since starting CrossFit in 2013, I knew I wanted to teach and help people to discover their own "aha" moment. Watching an athlete “get” a concept and observing their progress from day one is one of the most rewarding things I can think of.

What do you still find the most challenging about working out/CrossFit?

Burpees. Bear crawls. Anything with running. In all seriousness, I find the mental aspect the most challenging. It's so easy to give up or not try things you're not comfortable with and I've had to challenge myself many times to try something at least once. For me, getting out of my own head has been the biggest hurdle.

What's the real reason you do CrossFit?

To sustain and improve my health (physical and mental). And… to be able to pick up my 20 pound cat, Mr Sam, without throwing my back out and back squat more than the boys.

What's the soundtrack for your class?

Beyonce and Britney (cuz who run the world?) with early 2000s punky emo thrown in

What has CrossFit empowered you to do outside the gym?

To be fearless. To take risks and learning from my mistakes and move on a little wiser.

Logan

Owner/Head Coach

Owner of CrossFit Nordeast & Linden Hills by day, CrossFit coach at noon and early evening

How'd you know you wanted to become a coach?

When I started spending more time reading the CrossFit Journal at my desk job than doing my actual work, I knew it was time for a career change. CrossFit allowed me to pursue my passion for fitness and break out of the corporate setting.

What do you still find the most challenging about working out/CrossFit?

Pushing through discomfort. It’s easy to go through the motions. Pushing my boundaries and getting myself to do more than I think I can has always been a big challenge for me.

What's the real reason you do CrossFit?

So I can eat tacos

What's the soundtrack for your class?

Variety! I tend toward upbeat hip hop and electronica but will not hesitate to rock some Pantera now and then.

What has CrossFit empowered you to do outside the gym?

CrossFit has empowered me to not shy away from any physical activity. Before CrossFit I would complain about going on a walk if I didn’t have sufficient notice. Now I’m always up for getting outside and trying new things. My most recent “new thing” is golf. I know, it’s not some crazy physical challenge but before CrossFit I wouldn’t have even given golf a chance. Part of what I love about CrossFit is the student mindset. Learning new things is fun and keeps us alive!

What's the real reason you do CrossFit?

So I can take the elevator and not feel bad about it.

What's the soundtrack for your class?

Robyn vs. Cher or 80's Workout Tunes

How'd you know you wanted to become a coach?

Some of the most influential women in my life were my coaches. They encouraged me to be strong, they taught me to work hard and they inspired me to lead. A large part of who I am today – as both an athlete and a person – is in some part their doing. The thought of there being even a fraction of a chance that I could have a similar impact on someone at the gym makes coaching, for me, a no-brainer.

What do you still find the most challenging about working out/CrossFit?

Even after four years, it’s still really hard. And I know if I’m doing it right, it’ll always be hard. Finding the strength to push myself - especially during that extreme level of discomfort - will always be a challenge.

What's the real reason you do CrossFit?

I find I’m my strongest self – both physically and mentally - alongside a group of strong people. It took 26 years to figure out, but now I get to use that to my advantage every time I go to the gym.

What's the soundtrack for your class?

Early 00s pop-punk (Think: Blink-182, Yellowcard, Fall Out Boy... it's fast and loud without being screamy.)

What has CrossFit empowered you to do outside the gym?

Be unapologetically strong. In all things. I feel like it’s such a cliché, but strong really is beautiful – in any and all forms.

How'd you know you wanted to become a coach?

I wanted to represent the more seasoned CrossFitters, and I've been around so long I finally tired of explaining why I wasn't a coach. Also, as I approach the end of my teaching career, I will need something to get me out of the house.

What do you still find the most challenging about working out/CrossFit?

Burpees. And wall balls. For sure thrusters. Oh, and box jumps too. Ugh, rowing. Besides those things, tempering my competitiveness & senselessly trying to keep up with the youngsters is a constant challenge. But burpees never get easier.

What's the real reason you do CrossFit?

To stave off Father Time. And believe it or not, that guy is quick!

What's the soundtrack for your class?

Mostly Coach Coop (less the songs with the bad words) with a little bit of Coach Jenn mixed in & a permanent block on Coach Logan solo workout stuff.

What has CrossFit empowered you to do outside the gym?

Take my shirt off in public when necessary. Like if someone needs a tourniquet or something.

How'd you know you wanted to become a coach?

I was trapped in the world of boring endurance and solo gym sessions. I needed a change in vantage points, I needed a new community.

What do you still find the most challenging about working out/CrossFit?

Focus on technique and not always chasing PR numbers. It is really hard to dial it back and work on the things that suck and not just throw fat plates on and call it a day.

What's the real reason you do CrossFit?

I do CrossFit so I can be ripped at 35 when all my classmates are flabby.

What's the soundtrack for your class?

I love throwing on some 90’s and early 2000’s “summer jams”. We are the perfect age group to know the choreographed ByeByeBye dance but way too cool to admit to it. Then you’ll catch someone rocking out to some Blink182 they totally dug in high school followed by Britney, it makes me smile.

What's one thing CrossFit has empowered you to do outside the gym?

Knowing that no matter the adventure I can be ready for it: Hike 5 miles with a 30lb pack? Check, stamina for days. Snowboard the back country at 10K feet elevation? No problem, I've got the legs and lungs. Take a crash course in downhill mountain biking and then do a 3 day weekend of 10 hrs/day in the saddle? You got it.

How'd you know you wanted to become a coach?

I have a passion for movement. Although never really a “sporty” guy, I found myself experimenting with a life full of every sort of movement. Over the years, this obsession with movement and bodies and all the super cool stuff they can do (and can’t do...yet) lead me from bodybuilding to being a professional dancer, to Gymnastics and Parkour—eventually becoming a Gymnastics, MovNat, and CrossFit coach.

What do you find the most challenging about working out/CrossFit?

Putting on shoes and lifting heavy things.

What's the real reason you do CrossFit?

So I can take my shirt off at the pool...and crack walnuts with my butt cheeks.
